We use supersymmetry to enlarge the dimension of the Hilbert space on which the unitary evolution of the state of the quantum fields acts. We discuss how to control the unitary evolution or TPCP maps generated by the quantum evolution of the fields by controlling the vacuum expectations of other fields in the theory. This amounts to breaking supersymmetry using controlled vacuum expectation values of the other fields. The evolution of the wave functional or TPCP maps obtained by tracing out over other fields is based on the Feynman path integral formula for the fields. By using the methods of quantum stochastic filtering, we estimate the evolving state of the fields from non-demolition noise measurements and then design a family of TPCP maps evolving in time whose outputs match the estimated evolving state. In this way, we are able to simulate the evolution of the state of the quantum noisy fields. Direct matching of the designed TPCP map to output the evolving system state is not possible since there is no way by which we can determine the exact evolving state; we can only estimate it using non-demolition measurements. The family of designed TPCP maps can be based on using a simulated master equation with unknown parameters incorporated into the Hamiltonian and the other Lindblad operators, chosen so as to match the state outputted by the quantum filter.

We consider the propagation of the electromagnetic field within an optical fibre. The field consists of a classical component and a quantum component. The classical component is large and it interacts with the matter within the fibre comprising of atoms that are vibrating, ie, phonons. This interaction causes scattering of the classical field component that interacts with the quantum component of the field, thereby altering the state of the quantum field. After constructing this model, we propose two methods for reducing this "classical-photon-phonon interaction noise". The first method is based on an optimal control algorithm wherein we generate a "control potential" in such a way that after incorporating this potential in the Schrodinger dynamics of the state the state tracks as closely as possible a desired "noiseless state". The second approach is based on Belavkin’s quantum filtering theory wherein we model the classical photons as a quantum Bosonic white noise process and by taking non-demolition measurements on the system, we generate on a real-time basis, an estimate of the evolving state which by application of a control potential is made to track a desired state. Analysis of the spectrum of the transmitted quantum electromagnetic field is carried out by using a quantum stochastic differential model for the noise based on the Hudson-Parthasarathy quantum stochastic calculus. Further, the basic ideas of Cq channel capacities in quantum information theory are used to analyze the rate of information transmission through this optical fibre quantum mechanical channel. Transmission of other kinds of particles like non-Abelian matter and gauge particles are also discussed and the role of superstring theory in building a foundation for corrections to the Yang-Mills action is also discussed. We also highlight the use of the quantum effective action of a field when it interacts with other fields and with random current sources. The quantum effective action, obtained using Feynman’s path integral methods for fields provides a firm foundation for corrections to the classical action by quantum effects and enables one to describe the quantum corrections to the field equations accurately.

In this paper, we first derive the discrete time recursive stochastic filtering equations for a classical Markov process when noisy measurements of the process are made with the measurement noise at each discrete sample forms an iid Gaussian or non-Gaussian process. The filter involves deriving general formulae for the conditional mean process given measurements upto that time and also simultaneously recursive formulae for the conditional moments of the estimation error process. In the next section, we build upon the method of John Gough etal, to construct a supersymmetric quantum stochastic filter, ie, the supersymmetric Belavkin filter. The construction of supersymmetric noise in the Hudson Parthasarathy noisy Schrodinger equation is based on constructing Fermionic noise by applying a twist to Bosonic noise, ie, $dJ=(-1)^{\Lambda}dA, dJ^*=(-1)^{\Lambda}dA^*$. Such a Fermionic noise has memory unlike the Bosonic noise and satisfies the CAR. We prove that when a superposition of Bosonic quantum Brownian motion and Bosonic counting process along with Fermionic counting process is measured through the Hudson-Parthasarathy noisy Schrodinger system with both Bosonic and supersymmetric noise, then it satisfies the non-demolition property and hence conditional expectations can be defined. The construction of the quantum filter here involves taking into consideration all the positive integer powers of the output measurement noise differential and we give an algorithm for computing these powers based on the quantum Ito formula. The method for deriving a countably infinite number of linear equations for the filter coefficients is based on the reference probability method of Gough et.al. The method of constructing supersymmetric noise for driving the HPS equation is based on the work of Timothy Eyre. The main result of this paper is to derive an infinite system of linear equations for the quantum filter coefficients thereby yielding a real time implementable filter for estimating system observables or equivalently, the system mixed state from the most general form of non-demolition measurements comprising Bosonic continuous and counting noise plus Fermionic counting noise.

Given two Hamiltonians $H_0,H_1=H_0+V$ corresponding respectively to a free particle Hamiltonian and the free particle Hamiltonian plus its interaction energy with a scattering centre, we can compute the S-matrix, i.e., the matrix that determines the quantum mechanical amplitude of the process involving a particle coming from a free particle state at an infinite distance from the scattering centre at time $t=-\infty$, entering into an initial scattered state, interacting with the scattering centre, entering into a final scattered state, and then escaping away to infinity at time $t\rightarrow\infty$ to a final free particle state. Such amplitudes were first studied by Lippmann and Schwinger (Steven Weinberg, The Quantum Theory of Fields, Vol. 1, W.O. Amrein, Hilbert Space Methods in Quantum Mechanics) and then analyzed in a mathematically precise way by [T. Kato], [W. Amrein], and [K.B. Sinha]. In this paper, we first derive the Lippmann-Schwinger equation for the input and output scattered states in terms of the input and output free particle states using intuitive arguments originally due to Lippmann and Schwinger, and then, using rigorous operator theoretic arguments revolving around the spectral theorem for unbounded self-adjoint operators in a Hilbert space, we obtain an elegant formula for the scattering matrix elements in terms of the interaction potential and the free particle Hamiltonian between two free particle states corresponding to the same measure. We then discuss a computationally more efficient method based on the Dyson series expansion (Steven Weinberg, The Quantum Theory of Fields, Vol. 1), which works even in the case when the interaction Hamiltonian is time varying, in contrast to the Lippmann-Schwinger method, for calculating the S-matrix. We assume that the scattering potential, which can be time varying, can be controlled by incorporating control parameters and explain how the resulting unitary S-matrix can be made to approximate a given unitary gate in infinite-dimensional Hilbert space by optimizing the Hilbert-Schmidt/Frobenius norm distance between the given gate and the S-matrix gate, in which the latter is approximated by a truncated Dyson series. Of course, the S-matrix given by the Dyson series is a Taylor series functional expansion in the interaction potential and hence is a highly nonlinear function of the control parameters, and hence we propose numerical methods for such optimization. We then observe that if the control parameters are taken as random variables with joint moments, then the TPCP map involving statistical averaging of the adjoint action of the S-matrix acting on an initial mixed state w.r.t. the probability distribution of the control parameters will result in a final mixed state that is linear in the statistical moments of the control parameters, and hence optimization w.r.t. these moments can be easily carried out. Our method of TPCP map design is to optimize the sum of Frobenius distance squares between a sequence of desired output mixed states and the S-matrix based formula for the TPCP map acting on the corresponding input mixed states w.r.t. the statistical moments of the control parameters. We then generalize this method to include the case of TPCP maps obtained from the Hudson-Parthasarathy quantum noisy Schrödinger equation. In summary, we simulate the S-matrix gate for independent realizations of the control parameters having a probability distribution defined by their joint moments obtained by the above optimization procedure and apply the adjoint action of these independent S-matrices on a given input state, and take their ensemble average to obtain a good approximation to the action of the desired TPCP map on any given input state. This suggests that TPCP maps of arbitrarily large size can be realized using scattering experiments in the laboratory.

Maxwell equations in p time and q spatial dimensions are formulated. Properties of the Green’s function for the associated (p,q)-wave operator are derived based on contour integration. The notions of electric and magnetic fields in (p,q)-dimensions is explored by analogy with four dimensional physics and the problem of far field computation of the radiation field generated by charges and currents in $(1,n-1)$ space-time is analyzed. SO(p,q) invariance properties of the Maxwell equations are deduced and used to formulate SO(p,q)-group theoretic image processing problems in (p,q)-dimensions. Dirac’s equation in (p,q)-dimensional space-time is derived using the Clifford algebra of the Dirac gamma matrices. SO(p,q)-invariance of the Dirac equation based on the spinor representation of $SO(p,q)$ is mentioned. The Maxwell’s equations in (p,q)-dimensional curved space-time is analyzed using perturbation theory in the context of maximally symmetric spaces which play a fundamental role in $(p,q)$-dimensional cosmological models for homogeneous and isotropic spaces. The Einstein-Maxwell equations for (p,q)-dimensional gravity and electromagnetism is studied and used to derive the equations of motion of point charges carrying mass moving under mutual gravitational and electromagnetic interactions in general relativity. Finally, Dirac’s equation in (p,q)-dimensional curved space-time interacting with the (p,q)-dimensional electromagnetic field is looked at. $U(1)$-Gauge, local SO(p,q) Lorentz and diffeomorphism invariance of this equation is analyzed. Local $SO(p,q)$ invariance of the curved space-time Dirac equation is deduced based on transformation properties of the Dirac matrices under the spinor representation. The appendix presents some applications of group representation theoretic statistical image processing on a manifold to the situation when the image field is described by the six component electromagnetic field tensor on which the Lorentz group acts.

We consider the interaction between a classical time-varying electric field and the atomic electrical dipole moment operator of a finite state atom and calculate approximately the mixed state evolution of the atom with such an interaction Hamiltonian up to quadratic orders in the external classical electric field using Schrodinger’s equation for mixed state evolution. From this approximate expression for the state evolution, we evaluate the average atomic electric dipole moment as a linear-quadratic function of the electric field. Later on, we also take into account Brownian motion bath noise that couples to the atomic dynamics, so that the Schrodinger equation dynamics gets modified to the Lindblad dynamics of an open quantum system, i.e., the master equation. From the average atomic dipole moment, we obtain an expression for the average polarization field of atoms constituting the medium through which the classical electromagnetic wave propagates. This average polarization is a linear-quadratic causal functional of the electric field. The resulting Maxwell equations for wave propagation, taking into account this polarization current density, thus acquire a quadratic nonlinearity which can be used to explain higher harmonic frequencies at the output of an optical fiber when the input is excited by the electric field coming from a monochromatic laser. We are then also able to calculate the mean square fluctuations in the polarization field using the evolving atomic state, and hence the electric field propagating through the medium of atoms acquires quantum fluctuations which can be used to explain time-varying random shifts in the spectral lines. As mentioned above, we include in this article an extension of this problem to the case when there is white Gaussian noise corrupting the state evolution dynamics of the atom and also the case when there is a pairwise interaction between the spin dipoles of atoms at two different locations. In the former case, we derive an approximate formula for the polarization field as well as its temporal statistical correlations, and we show how this computation can be extended to the latter case too. When there is a pairwise interaction between the atomic spins, we use a version of the approximate quantum Boltzmann equation to calculate the first and second order marginals of the atomic states, which is then used to compute the average polarization as well as its spatio-temporal correlations. Temporal correlations using second marginals of the atomic states cannot be computed using classical probabilistic methods owing to Heisenberg uncertainty, so we propose a sequential measurement-based strategy involving computation of the joint probabilities of the atomic spin components at two different times by first measuring one component of the spin, allowing for state collapse, and then following it up with nonlinear time evolution from the collapsed two-particle state using the quantum Boltzmann equation, followed further by measurement of another component of the spin at the second time.
